Dream Boats 1-2018

7 nyone unable to draw by hand is not a real designer » . So says Carlo Nuvolari during our chat. «Designing is a way of being; it means creating for real life, not publishing a rendering that is perhaps intriguing, but only thanks to artificial machinations» . Founded by Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard more than twenty years ago, and now a point of reference in the world of design, Nuvolari Lenard Design has a “book” with a long list of projects associated with important names in international shipbuilding - Bénéteau, Can- tieri di Sarnico, Carver, CRN, Dominator, Ferretti, Lürs- sen, Marquis, Monte Carlo Yachts, Oceanco, Palmer & Johnson, Perini Navi... - It has succeeded in revolution- ising the concept of luxury linked to the notion of going to sea, «a way of being, of moving, free of fashions» . There are three areas of activity: serial production, su- peryachts and interiors with projects for sailing and motor boats ranging from 35 feet up to the largest, now in progress: Redwood , the 139-metre Lürssen that will be launched in 2019. «A handsome yacht, the kind that you remember for its innovative solutions». In the megayacht sector, we are witnessing a highly insidious design war because, given their dispropor- tionate size, there is a risk of drawing a boat with the aesthetic canons and size of a passenger ship, which condemns a yacht to mediocrity... « It’s a rendering war: absurd projects that never see the light of day. If we dwell on yachts that really will be produced, the clash is more circumscribed. Given the interests at stake, boatyards, designers and consultants often abandon any semblance of passion: so many cubic metres built equals so much profit; subtlety, fantasy and original design are squeezed out progressively, in part because some architectural licences ill accord with safety regulations. Mediocrity is a real eventuality be- cause many designers and manufacturers make a great deal of their renderings, but behind these there is little Fabio Mazzeo in the offices of Exclusiva Design.
